Products containing PVC are non-degradable and have a detrimental effect on our health and the environment. Pharmamed has created a slogan "Be responsible," which reminds all parties of their responsibility in combatting these effects.
We have also set a mission and vision derived from this slogan. Our mission is to raise the awareness of negative environmental impacts in our employees, customers and suppliers and at the same time actively participate in its conservation.
As one of our goals is to raise environmental awareness, we select eco products that have less impact on the environment than standard products.
Over the past decade we have succeeded in our intention to spread awareness to our customers and we can proudly say that PVC-free products are now deeply rooted in everyday practice of healthcare professionals. Pharmamed is selling over 4,000 PVC-free products per month. This makes us particularly proud as we have significantly influenced the reduction of the use of PVC products, and have as a result contributed to sustainable development and reduced the negative impact on the environment.
Today, in the fast-paced lifestyle we all lead, it is difficult to be aware of all of our actions and the impact we have on the environment. For that reason, we appeal to the public institutions that procure their products and services through public procurement to conduct the so-called " Green Public Procurement”. Public bodies are important consumers in Europe: they spend about 2 trillion a year, which is about 17% of the EU gross domestic product. Using their purchasing power to select goods and services with less impact on the environment, they can make an important contribution to sustainable consumption and production.
By selecting non-PVC products, we make a significant difference. Throughout its life cycle, PVC has had a negative impact on human health and the environment. Not only is it dangerous in its basic form, but it also needs a large amount of heavy metals like mercury to stabilize it. Mercury is extremely toxic both throughout its life cycle and after it is disposed of. To make PVC more flexible, a certain amount of plasticizers, such as phthalates, is required at a concentration of 30-50%. Phthalates have a carcinogenic effect on human health by masking the female hormone oestrogen and causing a biological imbalance.
Polypropylene is 100% recyclable, while PVC cannot be recycled because of the toxic materials it contains. For example, one PVC bottle can contaminate the entire series of 100,000 PET bottles.
During fire, polypropylene releases relatively harmless by-products. While burning, it produces carbon dioxide, water, carbon monoxide and carbon. PVC combustion releases dioxins which are strong synthetic chemicals that cause cancer and damage the immune and reproductive system.
All eco products in our portfolio contain polypropylene. In addition to reducing the negative impact on the environment, the products are also much more comfortable to use as confirmed by many healthcare professionals and patients. All eco products from our portfolio can easily be found by selecting the eco products tag in our catalogue. You will see a large number of products for oxygen therapy and aerosol therapy, but there are also anaesthesia masks and breathing tubes.
